Georgie Crozier, Parliamentary Secretary for Health will launch Action for Equity: A Sexual and Reproductive Plan for Melbourne’s West 2013-2017 on Wednesday 2 October. The plan to improve the health of communities in the western region is based on four years of work by the Western Region Sexual and Reproductive Health partnership.
‘Melbourne’s west is lagging behind the rest of the state on a range of sexual and reproductive health indicators,’ says Dr Robyn Gregory, CEO of Women’s Health West.
‘Sexually active young people are less likely to report practicing safe sex with a condom, and our cervical screening rates are significantly lower than the state average.*
‘Notifications of chlamydia in the region have increased by 21 per cent in the past 3 years.*
The Western Region Sexual and Reproductive Health Promotion Partnership developed Action for Equity: A Sexual and Reproductive Health Plan for Melbourne’s West 2013-2017 to reverse these trends.
The partnership, led by Women’s health West, is a group of community, health and local government agencies committed to improving sexual and reproductive health in the region.
The plan focuses on key population groups that commonly experience poorer health outcomes to create equity in health outcomes across the region. These groups include young people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from migrant and refugee backgrounds and people living with a disability, among others.
‘Action for Equity is a great example of organisations working collaboratively to improve sexual and reproductive health and wellbeing of the entire region,’ said Dr Gregory.
