Medical Termination of Pregnancy

Action for Equity: A Sexual and Reproductive Health Plan for Melbourne West 2013-2017 is a four year plan that incorporates primary prevention and service coordination initiatives that work to achieve health equity. Action for Equity partners include state and local government departments, community and women’s health services, hospitals, a primary health networks and specialist statewide services. One of the plan’s objectives is to increase access to affordable contraceptives and fertility control throughout Melbourne’s west, including increasing the provision of medication termination of pregnancy (MTOP).

In 2012, medical abortion became available for the first time in Australia. Medical abortion is a safe and effective method of ending a pregnancy up to nine weeks (63 days) gestation, using medication instead of surgery. It is legally available in Victoria. Medical abortion can be prescribed by registered general practitioners (GPs) in local practices, and is also available at private clinics and some public hospitals.

Women’s Health West has been working with health practitioners to increase access to medical abortion for women in the west, and will continue to advocate for increased service provision within the region. For further information on medical abortion, pregnancy and contraceptive options, please call 1800 My Options on 1800 696 784 or visit their website.
