BECOMING BUTTERFLIES: ART EXHIBITION LAUNCH

Women from Heathdale launch their community art exhibition designed to promote women's groups to other women.

The Becoming Butterflies Women's Group have created art work representing what the group means to them and will launch their exhibition on the 3rd of December 2007 at the South Kingsville Community Centre.

The group was established in 2004, to bring women together in a supportive environment to promote health and wellbeing in Heathdale.

"The women of the group come together regularly to share stories and support one another through difficulties - and achieve remarkable things," says Sally Camilleri, Health Promotion Project Worker from Women's Health West.

The World Health Organisation identifies the presence of emotional and social support as a key factor that can protect individuals from experiencing depression, which is the most common mental illness that women experience. (WHO 2000)

"I'm meeting new people, making new friends. We inspire each other and do new things that we thought we couldn't do," says Tracey Sharpe, a member of Becoming Butterflies.

The original artwork and information on how to start your own women's group will be on display at South Kingsville Community Centre from Monday 3 December 2007 to 15 January 2008.
