If there's one common experience in the housing, family violence and homelessness sectors, it's the feeling of being overwhelmed by demand. With our heads down, many workers rarely find the time to get together with other agencies to reflect on the broader issues and how things could be better.
This frustration led to the Women, Housing and Homelessness Action Planning Day in August 2003. Organised in collaboration with regional housing and homelessness agencies, the day brought together around 100 people who have experienced homelessness, policy-makers and workers from a wide range of services to think creatively about meeting the housing needs of women in the Western Region.
One highlight of the day was the speech by Anne Gosley, representative of the Homeless Persons Association, who brought to the gathering both a critical view of government policy and a reality check about the lives and survival of homeless people. The day included workshops focussed on Indigenous women, women with disabilities, young women and family violence. Out of these and others came many ideas for 'ways forward' which were documented and distributed.
