Body Image Project

Body Image Body image visual resource

Under Women’s Health West’s Body Image Project, Laverton Secondary College students have been hard at work with Somebody’s Daughter Theatre Company creating an audiovisual resource for use in discussions about positive body image in other schools and the wider community.

Students have been working on three small group projects involving photography, music, and visual arts that will be collated to form a cohesive audio visual resource.

As part of our youth participation approach, we recently conducted an evaluation with the students and teachers, and our Body Image Project has yielded a few unexpected results! Since participating in the project, one of the students has begun thinking about pursuing a career in photography, and will begin by putting together a portfolio of the photos taken during our workshops. Additionally, the students have expressed that the project has given them an opportunity to meet and spend time with other students that they wouldn’t normally interact with, and both students and teachers feel that student-teacher interaction has improved since the project started.

Students have also had some suggestions for improving the project, including using different art products, having more time for playing instruments, and having music playing while they were working.

We’re very pleased to be involved in this project and to see the fantastic effects it’s had. It’s amazing to see what can be accomplished when students are put in the driver’s seat!
